For most normal folks, drinking means conviviality, companionship and colorful imagination. It means release from care, boredom and worry. It is joyous intimacy with friends and a feeling that life is good.

Stuck in a cycle of finding temporary relief through alcohol, it felt as though the real joys and love I truly desired were fading away. Until one day I found something that changed my life – sobriety.

Over time this newfound freedom from addiction took on bigger importance with each passing moment; discovering how the A.A program could help guide me to true contentment feels like an immense blessing every single day!

So that’s my story for Daily Reflections June 26. I’m reminded of the beauty of sobriety every time I read this passage, that over time “it truly does get better” – it grows and develops into something even better than imagined.

Life with sobriety is so much richer, more vibrant and full of purpose – something that’s hard to appreciate in moments of weakness. That said, I don’t take my sobriety for granted. Each moment is savored and cherished for what it brings to me today and what potential lies ahead because of it.

This perspective offers comfort on days when temptations arise and strength on days when courage may be needed. Every single day looking forward with sober eyes offers an opportunity to give thanks for the special gifts along the way.
