Daily Reflections November 27

In the beginning, the press could not understand our refusal of all personal publicity. They were genuinely baffled by our insistence upon anonymity. Then they got the point. Here was something rare in the world—a society which said it wished to publicize its principles and its work, but not its individual members. The press was delighted with this attitude. Ever since, these friends have reported A.A. with an enthusiasm which the most ardent members would find hard to match.

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 182

Practicing humility is one of the greatest gifts I can give myself and A.A. It’s essential that we remain anonymous to prevent my personal pride from overshadowing the power of the Fellowship.

While our members may not be in limelight due to practicing anonymity, it doesn’t mean their impact isn’t felt – both locally and globally!

Through cultivating changing attitudes with altruism at its heart, each member still makes an incredible difference for A.A., more than any self-promotion could ever make possible!

All in all, the principles of anonymity within A.A. go hand-in-hand with developing humility and recognizing our shortcomings. Ultimately, it is not individual promotion that will result in world wide recognition, but rather a collective effort to draw attention to the principles of A.A., as well as the altruistic attitudes generated by members’ desire to help each other and work together to build a more caring society.

For me personally, I understand that it is incredibly important for me to practice humility on a daily basis, so that this same attitude can be shared with other members of the Fellowship. When we come together as one collective unit, we have the potential to be unstoppable and unique in our endeavors!
