Daily Reflections January 10

As the fresh new year begins, it can be an incredibly daunting prospect for those struggling with alcohol addiction. 2020 may have been a difficult year to cope with, but January 10th provides us with an opportunity to take a look back on what was and reflect on where we are headed.

Whether your days of drinking are behind you or still ahead of you, we can all benefit from taking some time for self-reflection and contemplation. So today let’s come together as fellow fighting this battle against alcohol addiction and share our stories in hopes that one day we will make the journey to recovery.

Daily Reflections January 10

We learned that we had to fully concede to our innermost selves that we were alcoholics. This is the first step in recovery. The delusion that we are like other people, or presently may be, has to be smashed.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 30

Alcoholism can feel like an insurmountable challenge. But, through the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous and united against a common cause, we have hope for a better future–like survivors on a life raft at sea rowing together to make it safely ashore.

By leaning into each other’s support here in A.A., facing our addiction head-on is possible with strength from one another even when admitting defeat seems terrifyingly real or completely unavoidable .

Reflecting on today’s topic, I am left with a sense of reverence for the power of unity in Alcoholics Anonymous. No one can truly understand what it feels like to be at rock bottom unless they’ve experienced it themselves, but through A.A., we are reminded that we are all in this together.

We can let go of fear and self-judgment, and instead offer each other a hand when things seem too overwhelming to take on alone. By banding together, we can find strength that bolsters us even when we don’t think it’s possible to get sober or stay alcohol-free.

A.A. isn’t just a room full of strangers or an opportunity to commiserate with one another; if anything, it speaks volumes of knowingness and compassion into every crevice of our collective experience, supplying us with the courage to stand up and make a real change in our lives, no matter what!
