The moral inventory is a cool examination of the damages that occurred to us during life and a sincere effort to look at them in a true perspective. This has the effect of taking the ground glass out of us, the emotional substance that still cuts and inhibits.

I used to think that my Eighth Step list was dragging me into a whirlpool of resentment. After four years, I finally broke through the denial and now know what it feels like when those words are written from head to heart instead of just in your thoughts.

I remember how much time went by without letting myself create even one painting because all of this big secret inside got bottled up with nowhere for anything but anger or sadness to go- until there came an explosion on paper as reds, black and yellow brushes found themselves free at last!

I found myself in tears when I saw my artwork for the first time in a long while.

The recovery process has been difficult, but it is worth every hardship to have regained what was always mine: freedom of expression and creativity!


I found that recovery is a process of life-long learning and growth. Sobriety gave me the opportunity to learn how my defects cause pain, but also show me where there’s room for change in order to grow in character.

Recovery has helped me become aware of the truths about myself which weren’t available when I was using drugs or alcohol.
