. . . and became willing to make amends to them all.TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 77

The Eighth Step is all-encompassing and includes a list of everyone you have harmed.

This step requires forgiveness, which will be much easier if you’re willing to forgive those who’ve done wrong against you before listing them in your prayerful petition for mercy.

I have been thinking about a two-letter word every time the Lord’s Prayer is said. It happens to be “as.” I ask, “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” with this one meaning: in the same way that others do when they break my heart or take advantage of me.

If I am holding back anger and resentment while saying these words from prayer then it means more hatred will grow inside me because there was no forgiveness given which should instead call upon someone else for guidance on how to love them kindly.

Forgiveness is necessary for the Eighth Step.

If you don’t forgive someone, there’s no way they’ll be on your list of names to send forgiveness to them. Before I went through my first name and began placing it on the list, I said a little prayer – “I forgive anyone and everyone who has ever harmed me at any time and under any circumstances.”

And now that this step is done, it feels good knowing I have forgiven all those people who have wronged me in some way.
